Create and Destroy
Create and Destroy is a series of photographs that document the unique way in which skateboard culture affects interpretation and use of the man-made environment. As a teenager, skateboarding changed my perception of my immediate surroundings by transforming everyday architecture and infrastructure into ready-made obstacles. While my participation in the activity has declined in recent years, my view of the urban landscape in these regards has largely stayed the same. This is a common occurrence with many skateboarders. Through photography, I am exploring this phenomenon by giving consideration to locations that have been modified with wood or concrete, which demonstrate this uniqueness in perspective. I am interested in how these places are representative of skateboard culture and its innate struggle with rules and authority, and why, despite the likelihood of demolition, individuals continue to labor over these creations.
