Roller Skates & Crude Planks
These photographs highlight vintage skateboards, each handcrafted by individuals who, without realizing it, were creating objects that would evolve to shape a global culture--influencing fashion, music, art, entertainment, urban spaces, industry, and even language itself. These modest artifacts represent the genesis of it all. In the beginning, the only way to skateboard was to do it yourself—whether by repurposing crate scooters or fastening roller skates to wooden boards with wire, nails, or screws. Through their materials and craft, each of these objects carry a piece of history. At the same time, they underscore fundamental qualities of modern skateboarding—a drive to innovate and improvise, and a desire to discover and express one’s personal identity.
