A quick message from Daniel:
This artist book is the culmination of a project that allowed me to travel extensively and document the state that, since 2017, I have called home. During my time driving (mostly alone) in Utah's vast landscape, my thoughts frequently returned to something I read while researching the area's toponymy: "Language could not exist, history could not be written, and stories could not be told without names. Names are automatically given to things by human beings. This is our only source of communication, for there is no other way to leave a story for posterity than by and with names. Once a name is given, character and identity develop.” (John W. Van Cott). With this concept rattling in my mind, I considered the history, character, and identity that had been lost by indigenous people once settlers arrived and enthusiastically began naming the region. Residents of Utah, like myself, live on indigenous lands. I feel the responsibility to acknowledge the area's Native population, and the need to push against further erasure of their heritage and history. In order to do so, proceeds from book sales will be donated to Ute Land Trust and Utah Diné Bikéyah--organizations with missions to protect the cultural and natural resources of Utah's sacred, ancestral lands.
