Woodpecker Readymades

Every so often while working on a long-term project, my mind begins to wander. These mini-portfolios are the result of me entertaining those thoughts. This work exists for fun, and because I felt like it. They are my creative tangents.
This tangent is the result of meandering through the forest in search of woodpeckers. While on my walks, I began to find these detrital artifacts, which were created by the birds as they foraged for insects, excavated nests, or drummed to establish territories and attract mates. Similar to sculpture, these carvings arose from raw material, which was skillfully manipulated into its current form. However, unlike sculpture, there was no deliberate intention to create something visual. My interest in making these images is to give consideration to these ready-made sculptures, which were made without regard to aesthetic consideration, but which nevertheless were finely crafted, and contain an understated beauty.
